To keep everyone safe, and keep everyone moving if they need to be, we’re doing things differently.

We are currently open for business to help people who need to make essential journeys by providing the key products and services that will keep them moving at this critical time. But the way our stores operate has changed. The health and well-being of our colleagues and customers is our top priority, so these are the steps we are taking to help everyone stay safe.

Staying safe while we stay open

In our retail shops we have created two new ways to shop with us a “Drive in, Fit and Repair” proposition for essential motoring and cycling services alongside a “Drive in pick or collect point” for products which will be situated at the check in desk at the entrance to our stores. You will not be allowed to enter the store but our colleagues will be on hand to pick products for you. You will also be able to get click and collect orders from here.

We have also suspended some of our non-essential fitting services that take place inside your vehicle.

In our garages we will only allow one customer into our reception at any one point and we politely request that you do not remain on site whilst work is carried out on your car.

To keep our colleagues and customers safe, we will be ensuring that we maintain a 2 metre distance at all times.

Our mobile service proposition, Halfords Mobile Expert also allows for a range of contactless motoring services direct to your home.

    The Halfords Team

Obviously, we have also asked colleagues in the most vulnerable groups to stay at home and can confirm we will only continue to operate this service while we believe it is safe to do so for our colleagues and communities.

Our aim is to keep the key workers and businesses that are important to the COVID-19 response moving. Our teams play a critical role in keeping Britain’s vehicles on the road and safe to drive. Halfords is much more than a network of stores and garages. We provide fleet services to the British Transport Police, Border Control Agencies, the AA and several utilities providers including British Gas, SSE and EON. We’re also helping the key workers of Britain, the growing volunteer network and those of us making essential journeys, stay on the road with MOTs and vital motoring services.

    NHS Pledge

We know key workers and those of you who need to make essential journeys are choosing to cycle instead of using public transport, so as well as our free motoring check for NHS and emergency workers, we’re offering them a free Bike Service to ensure their bikes are safe, especially if they haven’t been used for a while and NHS and emergency workers get 10% off any replacement tyre.

At a time when our NHS is under so much pressure, we believe that it’s vital that the vehicles and bicycles on the road are as safe as possible and our teams will be there to help. The Deputy Chief Medical Offer has also cited cycling as a good way of the nation getting exercise, supporting physical and mental health, while importantly maintaining social distancing, and we can help everyone get their daily exercise on two wheels.

You can see all our NHS Pledge activity here in one place.

    COVID-19 FAQs

Halfords is much more than a network of stores and garages. Each month our trained experts carry out over 600,000 essential services for our customers. Our services mean we keep thousands of motorists and cyclists on the move every week, from performing MOTs, servicing and tyre replacements in our garages, to fitting batteries and repairing windscreen chips, carrying out cycling repairs and services in our shops, to our mobile fleet for services.

We may be using our vehicles less often right now, but the journeys we do make really count. They get nurses to hospitals, volunteers to the pharmacy, and parents to the supermarket. Our stores and garages help keep the UK’s civil and military forces, utility providers, ambulances and grocery retailers on the move and we fix the cars that companies like the AA can’t repair at the roadside.

Equally we’re here to support the nation’s cyclists with advice, servicing and parts. Many key workers rely on their bikes to get to work, whilst commuters who can’t work from home are switching in increasing numbers from public transport to bicycles – we want to ensure bikes are safe for these keyworkers especially if they haven’t been used for a while. Importantly in these times we’re also here to help adults and children get the exercise they need on two wheels, in line with Government guidance.

We are not staying open to sell non-essential goods, but because we help the NHS, the police and major distribution networks, including the lorry drivers who keep food in the shops, on the road. This is about selling things that keyworkers need to keep themselves moving.

In addition to keyworkers who need their cars and bikes to get to and from their places of work, millions of people rely on their vehicles to get to shops for groceries and medicines. Some people are avoiding public transport and millions of people who live in rural locations have no other choice but to drive or cycle.

All of our colleagues at our garages and stores are helping the NHS, police forces and organisations like the Ministry of Defence stay on the road by carrying out critical work like MOTs, repairs and motoring services.

Our colleagues’ work is crucial for key workers and families at this challenging time. The work they are doing to help the NHS, police forces and organisations like the Ministry of Defence stay on the road with essential motoring services, is invaluable. This means they are classed as key workers.

Based on the government advice we have reviewed our shop and garage estate to ensure we are able to offer essential services across the country in a way that is safe for our colleagues and our customers.

Most, but not all, of our garages and shops will remain open. While our shops will be open, we’re fundamentally changing the way our stores operate. To keep our colleagues and customers safe, we will be offering a “Drive in, fit and repair” proposition for essential motoring and cycling services alongside a “Drive in pick or collect point for products”. Essentially, we won’t be inviting customers into our stores, but providing services and collection from the front of store, all within the social distancing rules.

To see opening hours of shops and garages near you please see our website – these stores may change over time as we are committed to only operating where it is safe for colleagues and customers. Our mobile fleet will continue to serve customers on their drives and, of course, we’re open 24/7 online at www.halfords.com where you can order for delivery to you.

It goes without saying that we are taking care to ensure that vulnerable colleagues who should not be working at the present time are able to stay at home.

We are taking a number of steps to protect our customers and colleagues in our shops and garages, including:

    • We’re changing the way our stores operate.
    • We will no longer be accepting cash payments
    • We will no longer be giving paper receipts, all receipts will be sent via email
    • We won’t ask customers to sign paperwork.
    • We will only be offering essential services in our retail stores – i.e. essential maintenance such as bulb and battery fitting, we will not be offering services such as dashcam fitting
    • We’ll be enforcing a strict two metre rule
    • We’ll ensure that our colleagues have the cleaning materials (e.g. hand sanitiser) to support hygiene guidelines.

We will only open stores and garages, and operate our mobile services, where we are able to implement these measures fully.

We will continue to follow the government advice and review how we are serving customers across all our channels to ensure that we are doing what is right for customers and colleagues. At the moment the length of these changes is unknown – the halfords.com website will show latest opening hours for all shops and garages.

There are a number of ways you will be able to use our services or buy our products:

    Products:

    1. You can order online on halfords.com 24/7 and have your order delivered to you
    2. You can order online on halfords.com 24/7 and arrange for your order to be delivered to a local store
    3. You can visit a local store and ask the colleague to find you what you need from the store (note: we are not allowing customers into our stores; you will meet the colleague outside of the store)

    Services:

    1. You can book a service online on halfords.com 24/7 at your local garage or shop and then visit there to have the service completed
    2. Some services are offered on demand (e.g. bulb fitting) – for these services you can visit a store and the colleague will complete the service at your car for you
    3. Some services are offered via our mobile servicing services

To find out how best to book the service you need please visit the halfords.com website – this will also contain updated information about store and garage opening hours.

If you have made an order or booking, we will be contacting you shortly to update you on its progress. As a large number of our garages and shops will be open, we expect to be able to fulfil the majority of orders that have been made.

MOTs are being offered at all open Halfords Autocentres. To find your nearest garage and book your MOT visit www.halfords.com

Government legislation has been passed so that any cars requiring an MOT after March 30th will have a 6 month exemption from needing their MOT completed. However, vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition and drivers can be prosecuted if driving unsafe vehicles. If your MOT is due before March 30th then you will need to get your MOT completed before it expires.

Latest government advice can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/transport/mots

We are offering a number of services for NHS workers to help ensure their cars and bikes are safe to get to work:

    • We are offering a free ten-point car health check (worth £15) for NHS frontline staff so that their vehicles remain in good working order
    • NHS and emergency workers can also receive a free Bronze Bike Service (worth £30); this covers gears, drivetrain and brakes. Note that your bike doesn’t have to be bought from Halfords to use this service.
    • NHS & emergency workers will also get 10% off any replacement tyre in our garages or from our mobile home services.

To access any of the free car check or bike checks, please book your service online and show your ID card when visiting the store, and the colleague serving you will process your service free of charge. To access the discount on tyres you will need to pay full price online and then the colleague in your chosen Halfords garage will refund 10% of your cost.

Trade Card discounts will be applied online with your purchases. Other discounts (e.g. British cycling) cannot be processed online – if you wish to purchase products using these discounts you will need to order online and collect in store where the colleague will be able to apply your discount on provision of a membership card showing access to a valid discount.
