When you’re learning to drive there’s so much to take in. It’s more difficult than ever with both a theory and practical test to pass. While we can’t help you on the day, at Halfords you’ll find everything you need to make the whole process pain-free.

The first thing you’ll need is a set of L plates . We’ve got simple stick-on L plates, multifixing L plates and magnetic L plates. Once you’ve passed your test, we’ve got green P plates too if you want the added security.

A great driver knows the rules, so investing in a copy of the Highway Code is crucial. It’ll form part of your theory test too, so get used to reading. We’ve got theory test and hazard perception study aids for cars, LGVs and motorcycles too.

Where to put learner plates?

If you’re learning to drive, your L plates need to go on the front and back of your car somewhere flat, clear, and easy to spot. Avoid sticking them on the windscreen or dashboard. Other drivers need to know you’re a learner, so placement really matters.

Where to buy learner plates?

You can pick up learner plates easily at Halfords, either in-store or online. Whether you want magnetic or sticky ones, there's a good range to choose from. A must-have when you’re learning to drive and need to stay safe (and legal) on the roads.

Where to put L plates on a motorbike?

For motorbikes, L plates should be firmly fixed on the front and back but don’t just let them dangle. Make sure they’re upright and clearly visible. When you're learning to drive on two wheels, an L plate helps others give you the space and patience you need.

Are L plates mandatory?

Yes, they're absolutely mandatory if you're learning to drive in the UK, whether it’s a car or a motorbike. Unless you’re with a driving instructor in their vehicle, you’ve got to have L plates on every time you're out on the road.
