How To Troubleshoot A Dashcam

This guide explains how to install a dash cam in your vehicle. The exact method may vary depending on your car, so it’s important to check compatibility before starting.

Hardwiring is the preferred installation method because it allows the dash cam to switch on automatically with the ignition, removes visible cables, and ensures consistent recording while driving. If you’re not confident installing it yourself, here at Halfords, we offer a professional fitting service to take the hassle out of it.

Fitting Tools

Before you begin, make sure you have the correct tools. Typically, you’ll need:

  • Dash cam
  • Compatible hardwire kit
  • Trim removal tool
  • Cable ties
  • Screwdrivers
  • Multimeter
  • Insulation tape
  • Cable cutters
  • Gloves

Having everything ready beforehand helps make the installation smoother and safer.

Prepare Your Vehicle

Start by locating your fuse box and checking the fuse diagram in your vehicle handbook. You’ll need to identify an ignition-switched fuse, such as the cigarette lighter or rear wiper circuit.

It’s also important to plan your cable route in advance. Aim to:

  • Avoid airbags (especially in the A-pillar and roof lining)
  • Keep cables away from pedals and steering components
  • Follow existing factory wiring where possible

Taking time here helps ensure a safe and tidy installation.

Front Dash Cam Installation

Begin by positioning the dash cam behind the rear-view mirror, usually on the passenger side. This keeps it out of the driver’s line of sight while still providing a clear view of the road.

Make sure the lens sits within the windscreen wiper sweep area so it can record effectively in wet conditions.

Next, route the cable neatly along the top of the windscreen and down the A-pillar. Use trim tools to gently lift panels where needed and secure the cable with cable ties. Always avoid disturbing airbag components.

After routing the cable, move on to the hard-wire connection:

  • Remove the selected fuse
  • Insert it into a fuse spur
  • Fit the spur into the fuse box in parallel
  • Connect the earth wire to a suitable metal chassis point

You can use a multimeter to confirm you’ve chosen a proper grounding point (low resistance indicates a good connection).

Once connected, insulate all wiring, secure any loose cables, and refit trim panels. Finally, test the dash cam to ensure it powers on and off with the ignition.

Rear Dash Cam Installation

If you’re installing a rear camera, begin by connecting it temporarily to check everything works correctly and to identify any interference (particularly with DAB radio). If needed, a ferrite core can help reduce signal disruption.

Then position the rear camera at the bottom centre of the rear windscreen, ensuring the glass is clean for a strong adhesive bond.

Route the cable from front to rear along the passenger side of the vehicle. Try to follow existing wiring paths and avoid areas that may contain airbags or sensitive components.

Key points to remember:

  • Secure cables with trim tools and cable ties
  • Avoid roof lining where curtain airbags may be present
  • Keep wiring discreet and tightly routed

Once installed, connect both cameras and test recording on both units before refitting any trim.
