What size wiper blades do I need?

If you don't know the size of your windscreen wiper blades, you're not alone. Every day customers contact us asking us for help to find the right size of wiper blade for their car.

Windscreen wipers keep your view of the road clear, providing a crucial safety feature when driving in poor weather. In our windscreen wiper size guide, we explain how to check the size of your windscreen wipers and select the right replacements.

How to measure windscreen wiper size

When people talk about windscreen wiper size, they usually mean windscreen wiper blade size. The blade the removable strip that sits within the arm and makes contact with the windscreen.

Your windscreen wiper blade is measured in inches. There is a range of wiper blades available, in sizes from 10" to 32".

The correct wiper blade size is listed in your vehicle's handbook. If you have a copy of it (or can find one online), you should be able to quickly identify the correct size wiper blades.

If you don't have the handbook, the easiest way to measure your wiper blade is to simply pull your wiper arm away from your windscreen and use a tape measure.

You can also remove the wiper blade itself and look for any manufacturers marks or information. You should be able to see on the blade some information about its size.

If you're unable to check the size of your wiper or believe the current wiper fitted is the wrong size, then Halfords is here to help. Just enter your car's registration number into our handy online tool, and it will display the correct sized wipers for your vehicle.

Why does wiper blade size matter?

You must replace the wiper blades on your car with the same size.

If you replace your wiper blades with smaller blades, they won't cover the entire windscreen - leaving gaps.

Use wiper blades that are too big, and they will wear out more quickly. Any rubber left dangling at the end of the wiper become tangled or damaged.

Thankfully, finding the right wiper blades is simple.

How to check the condition of your windscreen wipers

You must regularly check your windscreen wipers and replace the blades if they're damaged or missing.

To check the condition of your wiper blades, lift the

windscreen wiper arm from the car and wipe the edge with a damp cloth to clean it.

Look closely at the blade and run your finger up and down the edge to identify and splits, cracks or missing sections in the rubber.

If you can see or feel any damage, you should replace your wiper blades. While a windscreen wiper check is included in your service and is part of every MOT test, we recommend that

drivers check their wiper blades every couple of months, or immediately if they experience any problems while driving.
