Measure performance

Resistance Level

Resistance Level

One of the key features to consider is the maximum resistance level of a turbo trainer.

The higher the number of watts, the greater the resistance and the further you can push yourself while training.

Power Accuracy

Power Accuracy

When training, we depend on data, especially power data. The more accurate this power data is, the more beneficial it is for our training.

It is therefore important to consider the power accuracy levels of any trainer. These will be displayed as a %, and generally, direct drive trainers will be more accurate than the wheel on equivalents.

Bike connection

Wheel On

Wheel On

Great for quick and easy installation, wheel on trainers connect directly to a bike’s back wheel.

Many are fully interactive and are compatible with apps such as Zwift. As the power accuracy tends to be lower on wheel on trainers, they are usually cheaper than the direct drive alternatives.

Direct Drive

Direct Drive

For direct drive trainers, the bike’s rear wheel is removed and the trainer connects directly to the cassette.

As a result, direct drive trainers have the benefit of being quieter, having better power accuracy and provide a more realistic riding feel.

They are therefore a great choice for those that are looking to train hard.

A more immersive experience

Smart Interactive

Smart Interactive

Interactive turbo trainers provide a more realistic experience as they automatically alter the resistance as you ride. Although non-interactive trainers can still be used, you get a more immersive experience when riding on apps such as Zwift thanks to the real-time simulation that an interactive trainer provides.

Gradient

Gradient

Most training apps feature climbing routes and gradient based training sessions. It’s therefore important to consider the maximum gradient that a trainer can simulate.

If you know which app you want to use, check the steepest gradients that the app contains and find a trainer that can simulate these.

Zwift

Zwift

Everyone in the world of cycling has heard of Zwift.

Thanks to its numerous features, Zwift has become one of the most popular training apps available. Through it, you can complete bespoke training plans, compete in races alongside pros or simply complete your weekly club rides – all in a virtual world.

To connect to Zwift, you will need a device with Ant+ or Bluetooth connectivity. For the full Zwift experience, you will also need a fully interactive trainer, so that the resistance changes as you ride through virtual worlds.
